History of RIMC

Rashtriya Indian Military College was established in the year 1922.  RIMC was established by the British empire for training Indian students to join Royal Military Academy to become trained officers of British Indian Army.   The RIMC was inaugurated by the Prince Edward, the Prince of Wales on 13th March,1922.    The name of the school was "Prince of Wales Royal Indian Military College" at the time of inauguration.  This school was located in 138 acres in Dehradun adjacent to the Garhi village.

The main purpose of starting RIMC was to give training to boys and give  them suitable education to take them to Royal Military college by the British.  British felt that this kind of public school was necessary for the Indian boys to make them suitable for the discipline of the Army.

A military commandant of the rank of Lt. Colonel was appointed as the civilian head master.  The first commandant was Lt. Col. H.L.Houghton of the Sikh Regiment who took over the charge of the college in 22nd February,1922.  The head master of the first group was  JGC Scott.  The first mess contractors of the RIMC were MS Hazir and Co. and the mess staff consisted of mostly Goans. Army Services Corps later on took over the mess.   Hira Lal Atal was the first Cadet Captain.  Major General Hira Lal Atal got the India's highest bravery award Param Vir Chakra.  K.S.Thimmayya was also one of the early cadets of this college.

Once India got independence in 1947, the school continued to train young boys to become part of Indian Armed Forces. Now RIMC serves the NDA which is in turn the feeder institution for Indian Military College.

Now the name of the school is Rashtriya Indian Military College (RIMC).

RIMC has produced many leaders of the society both in the Military as well as Civil areasFour chiefs of Army staff and one chief of the Air staff in India; one Commander-in-chief of the Army and two chief of the Air staff in Pakistan were from RIMC.
