Computer Science lab at RIMC

Even though RIMC is an old inst institution in India,  it does not lag behind in this age of information technology.  There are two computer science labs fully equipped with the latest hardware and software for providing opportunity to the students to learn computer skills.  The new hi-tech state of the art computer center has enough computers to maintain a computer student ratio of 1:2 at RIMC.

Library at RIMC

The library at RIMC has a collection of more than 12,000 books.  The library is named after one of the old boys of the institution, Major Somnath Sharma who was awarded with the first Param Vir Chakra which is the highest gallantry award in India.  Open shelf system is maintained in the library so that students can freely select the books of their choice.  There are books related to various categories like Science fiction, Psychology, Social studies, Economics, Travel, History, Science, Astronomy, Mathematics, English Literature, Sports, Hindi and English languages.  Subscription to various foreign and indian journals is also done in the school library.

History of RIMC

Rashtriya Indian Military College was established in the year 1922.  RIMC was established by the British empire for training Indian students to join Royal Military Academy to become trained officers of British Indian Army.   The RIMC was inaugurated by the Prince Edward, the Prince of Wales on 13th March,1922.    The name of the school was "Prince of Wales Royal Indian Military College" at the time of inauguration.  This school was located in 138 acres in Dehradun adjacent to the Garhi village.   

The main purpose of starting RIMC was to give training to boys and give  them suitable education to take them to Royal Military college by the British.  British felt that this kind of public school was necessary for the Indian boys to make them suitable for the discipline of the Army.

A military commandant of the rank of Lt. Colonel was appointed as the civilian head master.  The first commandant was Lt. Col. H.L.Houghton of the Sikh Regiment who took over the charge of the college in 22nd February,1922.  The head master of the first group was  JGC Scott.  The first mess contractors of the RIMC were MS Hazir and Co. and the mess staff consisted of mostly Goans. Army Services Corps later on took over the mess.   Hira Lal Atal was the first Cadet Captain.  Major General Hira Lal Atal got the India's highest bravery award Param Vir Chakra.  K.S.Thimmayya was also one of the early cadets of this college.

Once India got independence in 1947, the school continued to train young boys to become part of Indian Armed Forces. Now RIMC serves the NDA which is in turn the feeder institution for Indian Military College.

Now the name of the school is Rashtriya Indian Military College (RIMC).

RIMC has produced many leaders of the society both in the Military as well as Civil areasFour chiefs of Army staff and one chief of the Air staff in India; one Commander-in-chief of the Army and two chief of the Air staff in Pakistan were from RIMC.  




About Rashtriya Indian Military College

The RIMC or Rashtriya Indian Military College which is situated at Dehradun was inaugurated on 13th March,1922 by the Prince of Wales. This institute has a very long history.  A number of students of this institute are now working in Military as well as Civil fields.  Four chiefs of Army staff and one chief of air staff are from RIMC.  A number of officers of General/Flag/Air Rank and many high level officers are from RIMC. Also many high level dignitaries like Governors, Ambassadors, Ministers, CEOs of companies are also from RIMC.
 

This institute provides suitable education to Indian boys.  The Rashtriya Indian Military College is an institute which is established by ministry of Defense similar to the institutes like National Defence Academy, Pune Officers Training Academy, Chennai and Indian Military Academy, Dehradun.   This college provides education to the students in the age group of 11 1/2 to 18 years who are specially selected through an All Indian Entrance examination.  

The campus is situated in the foot hills of the Shivalik ranges in Doon valley and has a campus of 138 acres. This college has a mini township, a mini India with 250 boys who are selected from every state strictly according to the merit through a written examination.

Admission procedure to join RIMC

Every year 50 candidates are selected for admission to RIMC.  There are two semesters and RIMC selects only 25 candidates every semester.  The Candidates should not be less than 11 years and not more than 13 years of age as on  01(Jan)  or 01(July) of the term that they wish to join.

The admissions to RIMC are made to 8th class only.  The student must be studying in 7th class or above in a recognized school at the time of joining RIMC.   The applications should be submitted to the respective state government educaional departments.

The candidates are selected based on their performance in a written examination conducted twice a year.  This examination consists of test papers in English, Maths and General Knowledge.  English paper is for 125 marks, Maths for 200 marks and GK for 75 marks.  In order to pass in the entrance examination,  a student should get at least 50% marks in all the subjects.  The successful candidates will be called for an interview ( 50 marks) after which a merit list will be prepared.  and the candidates qualified will be sent for a medical test and those who finally are cleared will have to join the college.
